Hallelujah Trial is Tom Roberts (Cranebuilders, Beatowls) and John Canning Yates (Ella Guru): two Liverpool songwriters who knew each other for twenty years before playing a note together.
Their self-titled debut was recorded in the Gustav Adolf Church, the Scandinavian seamen’s church on the edge of the Baltic Triangle, and is released in a single 180g vinyl edition of 250 copies.
It will not appear on streaming services.
In their words:
“You go through the trial and the outcome is the hallelujah. Universal, everyday personal experiences and the small victories.”
Tom Roberts, on the name – taken from a 1960s advert for a film he has never seen.“The approach we’re taking is probably closer to the late Johnny Cash period. Songs in a room.”
John Canning Yates
